BACKGROUND
- Balfour Beatty awarded £75 million contract as part of major five year, £355 million Highways England improvement scheme
- A 1.5 kilometre site in the centre of Hull (Castle Street)
- Designed to improve access to the port, congestion, road safety and connections between the city centre and recreation facilities.
THE CHALLENGE
- Balfour Beatty deployed the industry’s first electric mini excavator.
- The electric excavators needed to be recharged each day.
- However, there was no mains power on site.
- Previously a diesel generator would have run 24/7 to provide on-site power.
- But this would eliminate the sustainable and environmental benefits gained so far.
