What is your current role, and what are your main responsibilities?
As a software engineer at Prolectric, my responsibilities include everything that involves development, maintenance and running of Prolectric’s portals. From coding new features to deploying them on Cloud, I cover all the necessary steps needed to provision a software application.
What inspired you to pursue this field, and how did you get started?
I’m a self taught programmer and an electrical engineer. I always look for ways to improve existing solutions already available in market with some flavour of software engineering on top of it, powered by my MSc in Computer Sciences.
Can you share an example of a successful project you worked on, and what made it successful?
Recently I had been involved in one of Prolectric’s major projects for controlling generators remotely, with the help of IoT and remote procedures, namely power portal. This project serves as baseline for anyone who wants to have an insight about their remote assets deployed to different areas of world.
How do you see the industry evolving in the next 5-10 years, and what trends do you think will drive this evolution?
This industry has seen an exponential rise in past decade. If you compared the growth from 2000-2010 with growth from 2010-2020, you’ll find a jump in advancements. With the advent of AI tools like ChatGPT, most of the tedious tasks have already been simplified.
How do you think technology is impacting the industry, and what opportunities and challenges does this present?
Monitoring with software on your desk is a breakthrough which is often overlooked. Industries should come up with remote control and monitoring systems. This seems like overkill at first and comes up with its own challenges, but is beneficial in the long run. These changes will reduce running costs of equipment and maintenance time, as then end-user will know prior what could possibly be wrong.
What are some common misconceptions about your industry or field you can dispel?
I think the recent evolution of AI has made people think it’s going to steal their place as developers or engineers. But the reality is quite opposite. AI tools like GPT’s are meant to help you instead. If you’re best in your field, using AI as your pair programmer will be your best bet.
