North Ayrshire, Scotland is home to 136,000 people and covers an area of 340 square miles including the islands of Arran, Great Cumbrae and Little Cumbrae. Located on the northern boundary, Beith is a small town situated in the Garnock Valley, approximately 20 miles (30 kilometres) south-west of Glasgow. The town is situated on the crest of a hill and was known originally as the “Hill o’ Beith” (hill of the birches) after its Court Hill.
Prolectric were contacted by North Ayrshire Council to carry out a solar lighting trial at one of the councils housing estates in Beith. Situated between two developments with no form of lighting, the cost and disruption of installing a mains powered solution was deemed too expensive. The council wished to trial solar lighting, which offered significant cost savings over the traditional mains powered solution.
The site included the provision of seven AE3 solar LED street lights from Prolectric, installed onto 5m pivoted columns. The installation of the columns was carried out by local contractor James Anderson Builders. The uniqueness about this model is that they come as an ‘All in One’ unit meaning the solar PV, light, PIR, battery and intelligent control are all contained within the one module. After many months of operation, feedback from John Hopkin, Contract Officer at North Ayrshire has resulted in further projects being considered by the council.
John commented, ‘Our solar lighting trial has been a huge success, feedback from both the householders and our own maintenance team has been really positive.’ Managing Director of Prolectric added, ‘We were very pleased to be able support North Ayrshire with our solar lighting. This lighting model is a tried, tested and proven solar light, designed specifically to cope with the harsh winters of northern latitudes, like Scotland’.
