What is your current role, and what are your main responsibilities?
I am a Mechanical Design Engineer in the Research and Development team at Prolectric. I’m responsible for creating 2D/3D CAD designs, conducting comprehensive mechanical analyses and overseeing simulations – an integral component of ensuring optimal performance and aesthetic precision in our products.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Since starting at Prolectric, my days have been a whirlwind of excitement. Although simulations have yet to grace my daily tasks, right now I’m deep into stress analysis for upcoming product launches.
I have also been redesigning existing products to create a more simplified and efficient process for the electrical engineers to conduct maintenance and servicing of our products.
When I first started, I concentrated on the design element of my job role as we were exploring possible modifications for the ProPower. This allowed me to work more closely with Dave, our Electrical Supervisor, which has been a game-changer – different perspectives, endless ideas.
However, when I do get the chance I try to support Ben, Product Development Engineer, with the lighting design work as we have noticed an increase in demand for our design services. It gives me a relaxed break from my daily tasks when I draw up lighting designs for clients.
What are some of the most exciting projects you have worked on recently?
While I can’t spill all the beans due to the sensitivity of some of our upcoming products, I can tell you about the eye-opening journey from an idea’s inception to its transformation into a tangible product that eventually hits the market.
Being part of this journey, watching concepts evolve into prototypes, and witnessing the transformation from sketches to actual production models has been an unparalleled experience. This is where the magic happens, where ideas take shape, and where the dreams of innovation become reality.
The process of refining, testing, and iterating is where the real thrill lies. The collaborative efforts, brainstorming sessions, and countless discussions all contribute to the creation of something truly remarkable.
While I can’t delve into specific details just yet, I can tell you that the journey from idea to production is a rollercoaster of excitement, learning, and the ultimate satisfaction of seeing a thought become a tangible marvel. So, stay tuned for more updates on the incredible projects brewing in the Prolectric pipeline.
What common misconceptions about your industry would you like to dispel?
One common misconception that I’m eager to debunk is the notion that solar power only works under scorching heat. While sunlight does optimise efficiency, the truth is that solar technology thrives on light – any light. It’s all about harnessing the energy from our most abundant resource, and I’m excited to be part of an industry that’s driving this clean energy revolution.
There you have it, a glimpse into the world as a Prolectric Mechanical Design Engineer. Every day is a blend of innovation, collaboration, and dispelling myths. I’m grateful to be at the forefront of transforming ideas into reality and challenging misconceptions that hold us back.
